Contributions of Immigrant Families into Local, State and Federal Economies
According to FAIR, the Federation for American Immigration Reform, providing K-12 education to illegal immigrant will cost $7.4 billion dollars to the US. Arizona, it claims, spends $187 million educating illegal immigrants for one year. The true facts are:
• The U.S. Internal Revenue Service has determined that undocumented immigrants paid almost $50 billion in federal income taxes from 1996 to 2003.
• Undocumented immigrants contribute $7 billion a year in Social Security taxes even though they cannot claim benefits.
• New immigrants entering the U.S. will provide an estimated net benefit of $407 billion to the Social Security system over the next 50 years.
• The National Research Council has reported that Americans gained between $1 and $10 billion per year from immigration's labor market in the mid-1990s alone.
• Arizona State tax revenue attributable to immigrant workers was an estimated $2.4 billion, with about $860 million for naturalized citizens plus about $1.5 billion for noncitizens.
• Arizona realized a positive of about $940 million dollars compared to the net 2004 fiscal impact of immigrants in the state.
• In tax revenues, consumer spending in 2004 by Arizona’s naturalized citizens generated tax revenues of approximately $460 million consisting of personal taxes of about $49 million, sales taxes of about $210 million, and business taxes of $190 million.
• Consumer spending in 2004 by Arizona’s non-citizens generated tax revenues of approximately $320 million.
• In Arizona personal income taxes, non-citizens paid nearly $36 million, sales taxes of $150 million, and business taxes of about $130 million.
• Immigrant households contributed $133 billion dollars to the government and may add as much as $10 billion dollars to the economy each year
